$6.1 Million Grant Awarded
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $6.1 million grant to establish a research institute focused on virology and virus ecology. University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) researchers and partnering institutions will study virus systems across domains of life. As a sub-awardee on the NSF grant, UAPB will serve as a hub site for the Host-Virus Evolutionary Dynamics Institute (HVEDI) with the University of Arkansas (UA). Dr. Anissa Buckner, professor and chair of the Biology Department serves as a co-principal investigator on the primary award with UA and serves as the lead on the sub-award to UAPB......... Garden Named for 101 Year Old Memeber
On July 18, the community garden located at 1811 West Pullen Ave, was named in honor of our very own 101-year old member, Mr. Thomas Vaughns. Mr. Vaughns spent his career supporting agriculture, teaching others farming techniques, and encouraging future generations of Arkansans. For 20 years, he served with the Cooperative Extension Service and spent more than a dozen years at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff as a horticultural specialist. He also served in roles at AmeriCorps VISTA, Delta Service Corps, and 4-H Clubs of America. ![]() |

Buckner Wins University Award
Dr. Anissa Evans Buckner wins the global engagement award from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff This award recognizes faculty and/or non-classified staff members for outstanding contributions to global education and
international programs at the University or in their field or discipline. The award honors individual faculty and staff who have distinguished themselves in their work, and serve
as a resource and inspiration to other faculty and staff. Dr. Anissa Buckner is a Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Biology, Co-Principal Investigator/Project Director for the Arkansas Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (ARK-LSAMP) at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). In 2019, she was appointed to serve on a four-member team sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) International Center grant. The grant awarded to Salish Kootenai College (Montana), is designed to increase international research opportunities for U.S. STEM students, especially LSAMP students. Dr. Buckner visited the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia with the delegation. ![]() |
